Biking in Astoria

Stop with the honking

I hate honking cars. Probably more than most people. I mean, have you thrown eggs at honking cars? And that’s only after getting pissed off, putting on pants, leaving my house, and talking to the offending driver. And they still honk?! Usually, when the eggs flew, they were honking at the garbage trucks. That’s a…

Bikes don’t hurt people. Cars Do.

Ben Fried over at Streetsblog has the data. In New York, about 10,000 pedestrians are injured in motor vehicle crashes per year. About 50 in bike collisions.

Man Driving SUV attacks bikes in San Fran

A horrible story from the West Coast: Witnesses said the SUV came speeding south on the street, hit the first bicyclist head on, and then hit the second less than a block away at 24th Street. The driver roared east about a mile to the corner of 23rd and Pennsylvania streets, where he hit the…

Three Cheers for Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes

He’s actually charging a driver for killing a bicyclist. Usually to get away with manslaughter all a driver has to do is stay at the scene and not be drunk. By the normal rules, the bicyclist would be blamed for biking without a bell.

Driver convicted of bike crash

That headline is as rare as “man bites dog”! Of course it took the driver, Christopher Thomas Thompson, a medical doctor, to tell police that he wanted to “teach them a lesson.” And it wasn’t the first time he tried to kill bicyclists. His M.O. is to pass the bikes–who were, in this case, actually…

A bit odd… but aren’t we all?

My friend in Pittsburgh sends me this: He put a bumper on his bike so that he could “take up as much room as a car.” He’s a bit odd — aren’t we all?

Broken Streets

I like the application of Broken Windows to traffic enforcement.

Try Honking At Me

Of course it takes two to tangle. But the only thing that should really matter here is that a cab driver, licensed by the city… purposefully used his cab as a weapon and slammed into a pedicab. How does anything–honking, fighting, coffee throwing, garbage can throwing–compare to that?! This man should not be driving. And…

Not for free, I don’t

I heard a story about a friend of mine in San Francisco. A car almost crashed into him by turning into his bike. Of course it was the car’s fault. And then out of this car comes a pissed-off guy. A HUGE pissed-off guy. Well my friend is worried that he’s about his ass kicked…

Pulaski Bridge Speeding

I biked to Brooklyn today and took the road rather than the sidewalk over the Pulaski Bridge. On the Brooklyn side there was a cop with a radar gun. So I stopped and asked him what the average speed of cars coming down the bridge is. “In the 50s. One hit 62.” The speed limit…
